Measure Stair Landing
About This Guide
Stairs with landings can seem tricky, but getting the perfect fit is simple when you treat the landing as a unique piece. We'll show you how to measure your landing platform and the surrounding steps to create a seamless, elegant look for your entire staircase.
Steps
Measure Your Landing Platform
Your landing platform is a distinct area, not just another stair tread. For a perfect, custom-made fit, measure its full width and length as if it were a standalone rug. If your landing has turns or angles, don't worry! Simply break it down into manageable rectangular or square sections and measure each one. Record every corner and curve for a precise fit. For safety and building code compliance, it's crucial to confirm the landing is at least as wide as your stairs and has a minimum depth of 36 inches in the direction you walk.
Measure the Individual Stair Treads
With the landing measured, turn your attention to the individual steps. For each stair tread above and below the landing, measure its width from side to side and its depth from the back (riser) to the front edge (nosing). Some homes have slight variations from step to step, which is perfectly normal. If you find any treads with different dimensions, simply jot down a number for each one so your custom-made treads will fit perfectly.

This is where your easy DIY stair remodel comes together! When placing your order, provide the measurements for each individual stair tread.
