Measure Stair Landing
Step 1 of 3

Step 1 · Measure Your Landing Platform
Your landing platform is a distinct area, not just another stair tread. For a perfect, custom-made fit, measure its full width and length as if it were a standalone rug. If your landing has turns or angles, don't worry! Simply break it down into manageable rectangular or square sections and measure each one. Record every corner and curve for a precise fit. For safety and building code compliance, it's crucial to confirm the landing is at least as wide as your stairs and has a minimum depth of 36 inches in the direction you walk.
For the landing, carefully measure its width and length — and if it turns or angles, break it into sections and measure each part separately.
The landing must be level.
The landing must be level.
General Hazard
Code requires a landing at the top and bottom of every staircase and at any change of direction.
