install treads on floating stairs
About This Guide
Floating stairs bring a beautiful, minimalist look to your home, but their open design can be a safety concern, especially for families with children or pets. This guide shows you how to install stair treads using a secure, non-damaging method that adds crucial traction and protects your beautiful wood. We'll walk you through this easy DIY stair remodel, a project you can complete with confidence to achieve results that offer both safety and style for your home.
Steps
Prepare Your Surface for a Perfect Bond
Just like any quality DIY project, preparation is key. For the adhesive on your double-sided carpet tape to create a lasting bond, it needs a perfectly clean surface. Any lingering dust, pet hair, or residue will prevent a secure grip. Take a moment to ensure each stair is completely clean and dry for a professional result that provides lasting peace of mind.
Apply Tape for Maximum Hold
To ensure your tread lies flat and stays put, proper tape application is crucial. Cut strips of a high-quality double-sided carpet tape to fit the back of the tread. We recommend creating a 'picture frame' of tape around the entire perimeter and adding one or two strips down the middle. These are the areas that handle the most foot traffic. Complete coverage is your best defense against shifting or lifting, giving you confidence with every step.
Position, Press, and Secure
Now for the satisfying part of this easy DIY stair remodel! Carefully place the tread onto the stair, making sure it's perfectly centered and aligned. Once you're happy with the placement, apply firm, even pressure starting from the center of the tread and smoothing your hands out toward the edges. This technique pushes out any trapped air, creating a solid, gap-free bond between the tread and the stair. Pay special attention to the edges to ensure they are fully secured.
Allow the Adhesive to Cure
Patience is the final ingredient for a successful installation. The adhesive on the double-sided carpet tape needs time to set and create a powerful, long-lasting hold. For the best results, avoid all foot traffic on your newly installed treads for a full 24 hours. It's also important to keep the area dry during this curing period. This small wait ensures your treads will be ready to handle everyday life and provide reliable safety for your family.
