Anchor Stringer Base to Footing
From Deck Stairs · Step 4 of 8 · Video by Simpson Strong-Tie

Showing 1:26–1:43 of the source video.
What happens in this clip
To support the bottom end of the stringers, a wood plate is first anchored to the concrete footing. Begin by drilling appropriate pilot holes into the wood plate and then into the concrete footing. Secure the wood plate using heavy-duty screw anchors, such as the stainless steel Titan HD anchors, driven with an impact driver. Once the plate is secured, the stringer is fastened to this plate using Simpson Strong-Tie A23Z framing angles. These angles are attached with fasteners to both the stringer and the wood plate to create a strong, stable base.
Goal: Create a secure and stable base for the stair stringers

About the full video
This project provides detailed instructions for constructing strong and safe stair stringer and tread connections for a deck, emphasizing the proper selection and installation of Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and fasteners. It covers connecting stringers to the deck joists, anchoring the stringer base to the footing, adding intermediate post supports, and securing treads, while also highlighting the importance of considering environmental corrosiveness and adhering to local building codes.
Step 4 of 8: Secure Stringers to Ground
Position the bottom of the stringers onto the prepared ground area, aligning them with the marks made in Step 2. Ensure the stringers are plumb and securely fastened to a stable base. This can be achieved by using concrete footings, metal stringer connectors anchored to concrete, or by burying the stringers slightly if local codes permit and the ground is stable.
