Prime and Paint Shiplap

What happens in this clip

Before painting, carefully tape off all adjacent surfaces (ceiling, walls, trim) to protect them from paint. Mask off any obstacles, such as the fireplace glass, with plastic drop cloth. Once prepared, apply a coat of stain-blocking primer, such as General Finishes Stain Blocking Primer or Zinsser B-I-N 1-2-3, brushing into the gaps and rolling the faces of each board. After the primer cures, apply two coats of your chosen paint, such as Behr Premium Plus in Polar Bear satin finish. Apply the paint in the same manner as the primer: brushing between the gaps and then rolling the board faces. Once the second coat is applied, remove the tape promptly to prevent paint peeling.

Step 6 of 6: Prime and Paint

Apply a coat of high-quality primer to all the new wood surfaces, including the top board, battens, and baseboard. Primer ensures even paint coverage and helps the topcoat adhere properly. Allow the primer to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once dry, lightly sand any rough spots with fine-grit sandpaper and wipe clean. Apply your chosen paint color in two or more thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next. For a smooth finish, use a high-quality paintbrush and roller.
