Steps
Measure and Mark Ceiling Opening
Carefully measure the length and width of the attic ladder unit. Transfer these measurements to the ceiling, ensuring they are square and centered within the desired location. Mark the cut lines on the ceiling drywall, and then locate and mark the attic joists that will need to be cut or reinforced.
Frame the Opening
Cut lumber (typically 2x6 or 2x8) to create a header that spans the width of the opening and two trimmer joists that run parallel to the existing joists. Attach the header to the ends of the trimmer joists, and then secure the frame assembly into the ceiling joists, creating a strong, rectangular opening for the ladder.
Position and Secure Attic Ladder
Carefully lift the attic ladder assembly into the framed opening. Align it so it fits snugly within the frame. Use the provided mounting brackets and screws/bolts to firmly attach the ladder to the framing. Ensure the ladder is level and square before fully tightening.
Install Trim and Finish
Measure and cut trim pieces to fit around the perimeter of the attic ladder opening, covering the gap between the ladder frame and the ceiling. Secure the trim with finish nails and fill any nail holes. Sand, prime, and paint or stain the trim to match the surrounding ceiling.
