Stair Tread Installation
Step 5 of 6

Step 5 · Install Your New Stair Treads
It's time to bring your vision to life. For a rock-solid installation that will stand the test of time, apply a generous bead of quality construction adhesive along the top of the riser and subfloor. Carefully set your new tread into position, ensuring it's flush with the riser and has your desired overhang. Secure the tread by driving screws from the top down into the subfloor and stringers. We always recommend pre-drilling pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting. For a clean, finished look, use trim-head screws and sink them just below the surface; you'll fill these small holes in the next step.
Using construction adhesive provides an extra layer of security and helps prevent squeaks.

Wipe away any excess adhesive immediately with a damp cloth before it dries.

General Hazard
Use appropriate length screws to ensure they penetrate into the stringers or solid subfloor for maximum holding power. Overlong screws can poke through the underside.
General Hazard
Ensure the treads are installed level and plumb. Any significant deviation can create a safety hazard.
