Connect to Existing Power

What happens in this clip

Before any electrical connections, **CRITICALLY IMPORTANT: TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE CIRCUIT AT THE BREAKER PANEL.** Verify with a non-contact voltage tester. In the attic, locate the existing power source you identified (the presenter uses a single-outlet junction box). Feed the new electrical supply wire into this junction box. Secure the wire using the box's clamp to prevent it from pulling out. Strip back the outer sheathing of all wires within the box, then strip the insulation from the individual conductors. Connect the new circuit's white (neutral) wire to the existing neutral wires, the black (hot) wire to the existing hot wire, and the bare copper (ground) wire to the existing ground wires. Use appropriately sized wire nuts for each connection and ensure they are tightly twisted. After connections are made, carefully fold the wires into the box and secure the box cover plate.

About the full video

This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to install a new flush mount light fixture and a wall switch in a pantry closet that previously had no electrical power. The process involves marking and cutting holes for the electrical boxes, running new wiring through the attic, connecting the new circuit to an existing power source, wiring the light switch, and finally installing and testing the light fixture.

Step 2 of 8: Determine Power Source and Circuit Needs

Locate a nearby electrical box or junction that can safely accommodate the new lighting circuit. Assess the existing circuit's amperage and determine if it has enough capacity for the added load of the new lights. If the existing circuit is insufficient or if local codes require a dedicated circuit for lighting, you will need to run a new cable from the main electrical panel. Consult an electrician if you are unsure about load calculations or code requirements.
