Make Wire Connections

What happens in this clip

Now, it's time to connect the electrical wires. First, take the bare copper ground wire from the fixture and wrap it securely around the green grounding screw on the mounting bracket, then tighten the screw with a screwdriver. Next, connect the neutral wire from the fixture (typically white) to the white neutral wire from the house wiring using a wire cap. Finally, connect the hot wire from the fixture to the 'hot' (power) wire from the house wiring (which you identified earlier) using another wire cap. For added security, wrap electrical tape around each wire cap connection.

Goal: Connect the light fixture to the house electrical system

What's used

Tools

  • Flathead Screwdriver
  • Ladder

Materials

  • Electrical Tape
  • Wire Caps
  • Solder and heat shrink

About the full video

This project provides a step-by-step guide on how to safely install a new chandelier or light fixture, including handling electrical wiring. It covers everything from assembling the fixture and removing the old one, to testing for live wires, making secure electrical connections, and ensuring proper height placement.

Step 6 of 8: Connect Wiring

Strip about 0.5 inches of insulation from the ends of the electrical cable wires (black, white, and ground). Connect the black wire (hot) from the cable to the corresponding black wire on the fixture using a wire nut. Connect the white wire (neutral) from the cable to the white wire on the fixture. Connect the bare copper or green wire (ground) from the cable to the green or bare ground screw on the fixture. Ensure all connections are tight and no bare wire is exposed outside the wire nut or connection point. Tuck wires neatly into the fixture's junction box.

Recessed Staircase Lighting

This project involves planning the layout, safely running electrical wiring, cutting holes in the wall, installing the light fixtures, and connecting them to a power source. It's a moderately complex electrical project that requires careful attention to safety and building codes.
