What happens in this clip

Another approach to strengthening the stairs is to add screws from the back of the riser into the tread. This can help pull the components together and eliminate movement. Ensure screws are long enough to penetrate both the riser and into the tread, but not so long that they poke through the top surface. Again, pre-drilling is recommended to prevent splitting.
