Stair Riser Wallpaper

Wipe down each stair riser with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris. For tougher grime or greasy spots, use a mild household cleaner and a sponge, then rinse with a clean, damp cloth and allow to dry completely before proceeding.

Measure the height and width of each stair riser. Add approximately 1-2 inches to each measurement for trimming. Transfer these dimensions to the back of the peel-and-stick wallpaper or to your stencil material, and cut precisely using a sharp utility knife or scissors.

Peel back a small portion of the backing paper from the top of the cut wallpaper piece. Align the top edge of the wallpaper with the top of the stair riser, ensuring it is straight. Slowly peel away the backing paper while pressing the wallpaper onto the riser, smoothing out any air bubbles with a squeegee or your hands as you go. Trim any excess material at the edges with the utility knife.

Position the stencil on the stair riser where you want the design. Secure the stencil using painter's tape. Using a stencil brush or a small foam roller, apply paint over the stencil openings. Use a dabbing or light rolling motion to avoid paint bleeding under the stencil. Once painted, carefully remove the stencil while the paint is still slightly wet.

Using a paint tray, load your stencil brush or roller with the chosen paint color. Apply the paint over the stencil openings with a light, tapping motion for brushes or gentle rolling for rollers. Ensure even coverage without over-saturating the brush/roller to prevent bleeding. Allow the first coat to dry according to the paint manufacturer's instructions before applying a second coat, if necessary.

Let the applied wallpaper or paint dry for at least 24-48 hours. While it may feel dry to the touch sooner, the adhesive or paint needs this time to fully cure for maximum durability and adhesion. Avoid heavy foot traffic on the stairs during this period.
