Apply Subsequent Stencil Colors

From Stair Riser Wallpaper · Step 4 of 6 · Video by Farrow & Ball

Showing 0:33–0:53 of the source video.

What happens in this clip

After applying the first color and allowing it to dry, carefully peel off the stencil. Reposition the stencil for the next section of the pattern on the same riser, or move to the next riser. Repeat the process of applying spray adhesive, mounting the stencil, and then dabbing with a clean stencil brush using the next chosen color. The video demonstrates using 'Nancy's Blushes, Modern Eggshell', 'Blue Ground, Modern Eggshell', 'Pink Ground, Modern Eggshell', and 'Green Blue, Modern Eggshell' for subsequent colors. Continue this process, allowing each color and layer to dry completely, until all risers are patterned and all desired colors are applied.

Goal: Complete the stencil pattern with multiple colors

About the full video

This project details how to transform plain stair risers into a decorative feature using stenciling techniques. It involves preparing the base, creating or selecting a stencil, carefully applying multiple coats of different colored paints, and finishing with a meticulous cleanup to achieve crisp, patterned stair risers.

Step 4 of 6: Stencil Application (if applicable)

Position the stencil on the stair riser where you want the design. Secure the stencil using painter's tape. Using a stencil brush or a small foam roller, apply paint over the stencil openings. Use a dabbing or light rolling motion to avoid paint bleeding under the stencil. Once painted, carefully remove the stencil while the paint is still slightly wet.
